I had an interesting conversation with a lady at the airport this morning. She was off to St Maarten this morning. As I wished her a safe trip she mentioned that she was actually going further than St. Maarten but rather to Saba ( a small volcanic island off the coast of St Maarten). That piqued my curiosity so the questions began ... why Saba?
Her son was a marine biologist on the island and had purchased a house there but was now posted in Qatar and she was going down to mind the house for awhile. According to her, you can choose a one and one half hour ride by ferry or a ten minute flight. The ferry is a rough ride and the flight in is quite harrowing as there is minimal space for the airstrip.
The ferry arrives on Thursday with supplies and that is when most shopping is done.
Most of the time is spent up in the hills viewing the Caribbean, wild orchids and butterflies.
If you are looking for an escape, Saba may be the answer.
